Mismatched nonlinear couplers with saturable nonlinearity

Abstract

An analytical investigation of the limitation of nonlinear saturation to all-optical switching and amplification in mismatched nonlinear couplers is presented, thus generalizing the earlier studies on nonlinear couplers either with mismatched cores in the absence of saturation or with matched cores in the presence of saturation. As in the case of matched couplers, mismatched saturable nonlinear couplers can support as many as two unstable modes accompanied by three in-phase stable modes at a fixed power within certain power ranges; surprisingly, however, the corresponding phase-space trajectory bears no resemblance to that of the matched couplers, revealing a qualitative change when the symmetry of structures is broken.
