Abstract

For optical waveguides with nonlinear cladding and a linear graded-index guide structure, a new method for determining the guided modes is proposed with the aid of the first-integral method and the matrix method. The results obtained by this method show excellent agreement with the exact results for the exponential-type graded-index guide. Further, this method enables us to analyze the power-dependent dispersion in a directional coupler that consists of graded-index guides surrounded by the nonlinear medium.
