Quasi-periodic oscillations and chaos in a gas-discharge active mode-locked laser

Abstract

Experimentally the quasi-periodic oscillations and chaos that appear on the destruction of active mode locking in a He–Ne laser operated at 1150 nm are shown to be connected with the high supermodes. The different stationary pulse profiles that may be identified with these supermodes are also discussed. It is found that there exists a difference between positive and negative tuning of loss modulation frequency and beat frequency. The bifurcation diagram is constructed in the parameter plane (amplitude and frequency of loss modulation), and regions of different dynamics are distinguished in the diagram. Theoretical estimates show that low-frequency period doubling and intermittency may occur if the level of modulation decreases.
