Abstract

The space-charge wave theory of photorefractive parametric amplification is presented. It describes the amplification process in which a strong running holographic grating pumps energy into a weak holographic grating. Compared with earlier theoretical presentations, the space-charge wave approach gives much deeper insight in the fundamental physical processes; in addition, the amplitude equation for the amplified holographic grating can be solved analytically.
