Abstract

By introduction of a periodic sinusoidal corrugation of the nonlinear-optical (NLO) susceptibility into a slab waveguide, it is proposed that Čerenkov radiative second-harmonic generation (SHG) may be used to enhance the SHG power; numerical estimates are presented for applying this scheme to an organic NLO polymer. For a periodic sinusoidal χ(2) corrugation made of a vinylidene cyanide–vinyl acetate copolymer at the fundamental wavelength of 1.06 μm, the SHG enhancement factor has been numerically analyzed as function of the thickness of a guiding layer d, showing that an enhancement factor of ~2 is obtainable for the second-order guided mode with d = 4.8 μm.
